Brief History of Humbolt County, CA
Humbolt County is found on California State Highway 1, approximately 110 miles south of the Oregon border. The area was originally settled by several Indian tribes including the Wiyots, th Yuroks, Hupas, Karuks, and others. In 1853 Humboldt County was carved out of parts of Trinity County reflecting its increasing importance in the state. It is named for Humboldt Bay which was named Humboldt in honor of the naturalist and world explorer, Baron Alexander von Humboldt. Humbolt County is located along the Pacific Ocean which provides for scenic vistas and unlimited opportunities for outdoor activities. It’s magnificent redwood trees are known throughout the world. Humbolt County is surrounded by Del Norte, Mendocino, Trinity and Siskiyou Counties. Humbolt County is an area of mild temperatures and heavy rain. Annual rainfall can be over 100 inches a year in the wettest parts of Humboldt county.
