Brief History of Huntington Park, CA
Established in 1906 as a bedroom community for workers in the south part of Los Angeles. Huntington Park was connected by streetcars to the local job centers. In fact, the city was named for Henry Huntington, who owned the Pacific Electric Railway. Even today, approximately one-third of Huntington Park’s residents work in the factories of nearby Vernon and Commerce. The city is located between the 110 and the 710 freeways, between the cities of South Gate and Vernon. When it was first established as a bedroom community for the working class, along with the cities of Bell, Cudahy and South Gate, Huntington Park was almost completely white. Now, as the demographics of Southern California have changed, the area tends to be heavily Hispanic. The total population of Huntington Park is just over 61,000, with a Hispanic population of approximately 58,500—or 96% of the population.
