Brief History of Imperial County, CA
Imperial County was formed in 1907 from the eastern half of San Diego County. The county took its name from the Imperial Land Company, which was formed in the early 20th century to reclaim the southern portion of the Colorado desert for agriculture. The climate in generally hot and dry, with the temperatures averaging 110 degrees in the Summer. There is very little rainfall, averaging less than 3 inches a year. The commercial farming in the area is almost completely dependent on irrigation water from the Colorado river. The ethnic population in the Imperial County is heavily Hispanic, reflecting its history as part of Mexico and its proximity to California’s southern border. The terrain varies from Angel peak at 4,500 feet to a low at the Salton Sea which is 235 feet below sea level.
