Brief History of Kern County, CA
Kern County is also known as California’s Golden Empire. The area was first settled by the Spanish in the late 1700s. Walker Pass is one of the few passes across the Sierra Nevada mountain range that isn’t closed by the winter storms was discovered in 1834. It is now a National Historic Landmark. In 1848, the Kern area was given to the United States as part of the transfer of from the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In its beginning, Kern County was dominated by mining in the mountains and desert. The area is part of two major “rushes” in early California, the gold rush, and the California Oil rush. It is a beautiful area combining farm lands and outdoor recreational activities. The Kern river is a haven for outdoorsman. Kern County is the third largest county in California, bigger than most states in the United States.
