Brief History of Kettleman, CA
Kettleman City California, located just off of California highway 5 between the cities of Avenal and Corcoran. Although it is a small town of about 1,500 people, it is a very popular stop for travelers because it is halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco so people need to stop for gas and food. The adjacent Kettleman Hills were known for a black gold (oil) rush in the 1920s and 30s. Thousands of speculators rushed to the area seeking their fortunes. In fact, the Kettleman North Dome oil field became one of the most prolific oil fields in the United States during the 1930s. As the oil boom petered out, population dwindled until recently, where spiking oil prices have renewed interest in the Kettleman oil. Kettleman city is primarily an agricultural city. 94% of the residents are Hispanic, and Spanish is the primary language spoken by the residents. The climate of Kettleman City is similar to most of King’s County and the San Joaquin valley which is hot in the summer and cool in the winter.
