Brief History of Los Angeles County, CA
Los Angeles County was established on February 18, 1850, only months before California was admitted into the Union. It originally occupied a small area along the coast between Santa Barbara and San Diego. Within a year its boundaries grew. Today, Los Angeles County remains one of the largest counties. The islands of Santa Catalina and San Clemente are a part of the Los Angeles County. It is bordered on the east by Orange and San Bernardino Counties, on the north by Kern County, on the west by Ventura County, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. Los Angeles County has the largest population of any other county in the nation and is exceeded by only eight states. There are 88 cities located in the county, each with its on city council. Los Angeles County is the largest employer in the five county region. Traditional mandatory services include law enforcement, property assessment, tax collection, public health protection, public social services and relief to indigents.
