Brief History of Lafayette, CA
It was over 10,000 years ago when the Saclans settled in the Lafayette area. A battle occurred between the Saclans and the Spaniards in 1797. One of the first Yankee settlers in Contra Costa County, Elam Brown, purchased a 3,329 acre Mexican land grant and called it Rancho Acalanus. Rancho Acalanus is now most of present day Lafayette. Brown formed the first community in central Contra Costa County after the construction of his first home in 1848. He later built a mill because the he was tired of the7-10 day trip to San Jose for the nearest one. Lafayette became more established after the mill was built. The first businesses in Lafayette included a bar, a general store, and a blacksmith’s shop.
