Brief History of Lake County, CA
Lake County is another one of California’s counties that was formed by dividing up other counties. It started in 1861, created by combining segments of Napa and Mendocino counties. As such, it is one of California’s respected wine counties. Lake County is primarily an agricultural area, offering unsurpassed beauty in a tranquil setting. It is named for Clear Lake, which is the biggest freshwater lake in Californa, and is reported to be the oldest Lake in North America. In the early days wine grapes were the primary crop of the county, and by the 1900’s the Lake County was earning a reputation for producing some of the world's greatest wines. Unfortunately, in 1920 Prohibition put a stop to Lake County wine production. Most of the vineyards were ripped out and were turned into walnut and pear farms. This remained the case for several years until about 1960 when one again the vineyards began to re-appear. Now, many of the vineyards in Lake County have adopted the techniques of sustainable farming practices which will serve the county well into the future.
