Brief History of Lassen County, CA
Lassen County was formed in 1864 from parts of Plumas and Shasta Counties. Although it is located near the northern edge of California using today’s boundries, it didn’t start as part of California.It started as part of Nevada, and was included in the unofficial area known as the Nataqua Territory and actually part of Roop County during the late 1860s.The county's name comes from Mount Lassen, which although a great monument, is located in the adjacent county of Shasta. Lassen County is a wilderness county, where hunting, fishing and logging are prevalent. It boasts good weather, clean air and a wonderful environment to raise a family. Mount Lassen was named for Peter Lassen, a famous trapper, mountain man and a fierce Indian fighter.
