Brief History of Livingston, CA
Located on California highway 99, between the cities of Atwater and Delhi, California is the city of Livingston. Although only 11,000 people live there this is a rapidly growing industrial city. Livingston’s economy is intertwined with the economy of Merced County because it is located in one of California’s enterprise zones. Livingston used to be called the last stop, because it was the only stoplight between Sacramento and Bakersfield. Sadly, the stoplight has now been moved as there are no stoplights on California state highways. The largest employers in Livingston are Gallo, with a large wine processing plant and Foster Farms Chicken, whose headquarters is located in Livingston. Like the rest of the San Joaquin valley, Livingston’s climate is characterized by long hot summers which makes irrigation a necessity. Nevertheless, crops are king in this central California city.
