Brief History of Lone Pine, CA
Just south of Bishop, California and Independence on U.S. Highway 395 in the town of Line Pine. This census designated place of about 1,700 people is based primarily on tourism as it is the gateway to such places as Mount Whitney, Kings Canyon and Death Valley. Lone Pine was founded during the 1860's as a supply center to the local mining communities of Kearsarge, Cerro Gordo and Darwin. Like Big Pine, the town of Lone Pine was named for a single tree in the area. Unfortunately that tree was destroyed in a flood.
