Los Banos, California, located off of the interstate 5 freeway, south of Turlock and west of Chowchilla. Los Banos, with a population of over 35,000 is the second largest city in Merced County. The area was founded by Gabriel Moraga during an exploration in 1805. It was an area of natural beauty and a plethora of wild game. Now, Los Banos is an agricultural city with a modern edge. Henry Miller, a cattle king of California’s goldrush days is credited with putting Los Banos on the map. He brought in the railroad, created the world’s largest gravity-fed irrigation system and founded one of the world’s biggest meat packing plants right here in Los Banos. Henry Miller’s irrigation system is still used today in Los Banos, watering 40 different kinds of crops in this wonderland of agriculture.
