Brief History of Madera, CA
Not including Madera, the towns of Modesto, Merced, Minturn, Borden, and Berenda came to existence as the Southern Pacific Railroad laid its tracks through the San Joaquin Valley. Madera on the other hand was just a small community that was not part of the Southern Pacific’s plan and didn’t have any connection with mining. However, Madera became the county seat for Madera County. The town was laid out by the California Lumber Company and named it Madera, which is the Spanish word for lumber.
