Brief History of Madera County, CA
Madera County is located in California’s central valley along the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It was created by dividing up parts of Fresno County in 1893. Madera in Spanish means timber or lumber. The name comes from the small city of Madera County, so-named for the giant log flume that used to transport lumber to the from the forests to the railroad in the early days.
