Brief History of Marin County, CA
Like Mariposa County, Marin County is one of the original counties of California, founded in 1850 right before California officially became a state. How the name of the county came about is the subject of some debate. Some say that it was named for Chief Marin, of the Coast Miwok, Licatiut tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area. They were perhaps best known for their bravery and battles waged against the early Spanish explorers coming to California. Others say that the county is named for the bay nearby which was called Bahía de Nuestra Señora del Rosario la Marinera, and it is quite possible that Marin County is just a shortened form of of reference to the bay.
