Brief History of Mariposa County, CA
As one of the first counties in California, Mariposa County was started when California became a state in 1850. It was once the biggest county in the state, but as California grew in population the county divisions got smaller and smaller. Now, parts of Mariposa county has been annexed to several different counties including Fresno, Kern, Inyo, Kings County , Los Angeles, Madera, Merced, Mono, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, and Tulare. This is why Mariposa County is also called the "Mother of California Counties". One interesting fact is that there are no incorporated cities in this county. The original name of the country came from Mariposa Creek, named by the early Spanish explorers in 1806, after finding huge groups of butterflies ("mariposas" in Spanish) in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. For a long time, residents celebrated the annual arrival (in May) of migrating Monarch butterflies with a "Butterfly Days" parade. Nowdays, when one thinks of the history of Mariposa County it is thoughts of the big California goldrush that come to mind.
