Brief History of Martinez, CA
Martinez was included in a 17,000 acre land grant that was deeded to Don Ygnacio Martinez from the Mexican government in 1824. The land grant was named Rancho El Pinole. Martinez was named after Don Ygnacio in 1849. During the gold rush many settlers sold, bought, and shipped their goods in Martinez. The popular “Martini,” drink was created in Martinez by a one of the settlers. The residents of Martinez tried to incorporate when California became a state in 1850. Unfortunately Martinez did not have 200 registered voters, which is a state mandate for incorporation. Martinez finally incorporated in 1876 as a city in Contra Costa County.
