Brief History of Merced, CA
The City of Merced, the county seat of Merced County is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is the largest city in Merced County with a population in excess of 80,000. Merced is located on California Highway 99, where it intersects with Highways 140 and 59. Merced also is served by two railroads, the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern. Merced was incorporated in 1889 and operates under the Council-Manager form of government. Merced has traditionally relied upon agricultural related business and Castle Air Force Base for its economic underpinnings. After Castle closed in the 1995, Merced set about to redefine itself as an industrial center. Merced appears to be on track to accomplish those goals. In 2005 the University of California opened the Merced campus, which can accommodate up to 25,000 students. Unfortunately, Merced is most recently known as one of California’s cities with the highest rate of home foreclosures in the economic downturn of 2008. In fact Merced county has had the dubious honor in 2008 of having the highest home foreclosure rate in the nation.
