Brief History of Modoc County, CA
On February 17 th 1874 Governor Newton Booth signed an Act of the California legislature and that’s the time Modoc County was formed. The word “Modoc” might be derived from the Klamath word Moatakni meaning southerners. It may also be derived from the Native American people who lived in the Klamath River.
In 1872, during the Modoc War, there was worldwide recognition brought to the county. There was a problem with the purchase of the territory. The American Government wanted to purchase the territory from the Klamath people when the territory belonged to the Modoc people. The people of Modoc County were forced to move out in to the Klamath Reservation in Oregon. Klamath people made it clear that the Modoc people were not welcome there. General Edward Canby was shot by a companion of Captain Jack.
