Brief History of Mokelumne Hill, CA
Called Moke Hill by the locals, Mokelumne Hill, California is a beautiful little community in Calaveras County. Located on highway 49 between the towns of San Andreas and Sutter Creek, this town was Gold Mine Central in the mid 1850s. The area was so rich that the goldminers refused to leave their claims even to go buy food and supplies in Stockton, California. Several came close to starving until one miner made the trip, and hit it rich selling goods to other miners. Like the other towns in Calaveras County, the gold in Mokelumne Hill started to run out in the 1860 and with it, went the main reason to visit Mokelumne Hill. Now Mokelumne Hill is a quiet little tourism oriented town, still beautiful, but more historic than vital.
