Brief History of Mono County, CA
In 1866 parts of the county’s territory were given to Inyo County. Mono County, California was formed from a compilation of the counties, Fresno, Mariposa and Calaveras. A Native American Paiute tribe inhabited parts of the Sierra Nevada who had western neighbors called the “Monachie” meaning “Fly people.” The County is named after Mono Lake. The trading article in Mono County was the pupae of a fly which was their chief food staple.
