Brief History of Montebello, CA
Montebello is situated in Los Angeles County. Native American tribes inhabited the area long before the arrival of the Spaniards. The city of Montebello originally consisted of parts of Rancho San Antonio, Rancho La Merced, and Rancho Pase de Bartolo. There were very few of the Tonva left by 1870 because they were killed by European diseases. At one point known as Newmark, Montebello was originally an agricultural community, but became a major contributor to oil production after the discovery of oil by Standard Oil Company. Montebello means beautiful hills in Italian. Montebello became incorporated as the 35 th city in Los Angeles County on October 19, 1920.
