Brief History of Moraga, CA

Moraga is named after Joaqin Moraga, the grandson of Joseph Joaqin Moraga. Joaqin’s grandfather was second in command of the Anza Expedition of 1776. The Mexican government deeded a 13,316 acre land grant to Joseph Joaqin Moraga and his cousin Juan Bernal. The land grant was known as Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados. It included regions of Orinda, Lafayette, and the communities of Canyon, Rheem, and Moraga. The Moraga land was primarily used for agriculture, farming, and cattle grazing. For many years only 20 farm families inhabited the Rancho. Moraga was eventually purchased by the Utah Construction and Mining. The residents of Moraga refused to allow the developers from overbuilding and altering their peaceful and rural community. On November of 1974, Moraga incorporated as a city in Contra Costa County.
