Brief History of Murphys, CA
Queen of the Sierra and coolest little town in America (by Frommers) are just two of the nicknames of this magical little town. Murphys, like the surrounding towns of Angels Camp and Avery, California was born during the California Gold rush of the 1850s and was named for two brothers named Murphy. Interestingly enough, the brothers made their fortune, not in mining, but as merchants selling the basic supplies to the local miners. Murphy’s 2,000 inhabitants enjoy the rich history that has been preserved in the town, and also the modern touches and amenities that today’s visitors have come to expect.
