Brief History of Napa County, CA
In pre-historic times the maximum population of Napa County is not more than 5000 people. The valley was inhabited by the Patwin Native Americans. In the Northwestern Foothills, there might of been possible inhabitation by Wappo tribes. The people that were called Diggers might have been constructing villages near the floodplains of watercourses. The Diggers in Napa County had food that consisted of a combination of small animals, wild roots, food made by kernels and acorns. Summers in Napa County, California were spent camping by the streams and rivers while winters were spent gathering tree branches to construct huts wearing wild animal skins or no clothing at all.
In the early 1800’s cattle and sheep were grazed by the Russians from Fort Ross. Before that in 1776, a fort was brought forth by a Spanish Governor just northwest of Napa County.
