Brief History of Oakland, CA

In 1772, Oakland was claimed for the Spanish kings by explorers from New Spain. The land in which Oakland is situated was granted to Luis Maria Peralta for his Rancho San Antonio. Today’s downtown and the area extending over into the adjacent part of Alameda was covered with a woodland of oak trees. Which is probably how Oakland got its first name, encinal, the Spanish word for “oak grove.” Oakland was founded in 1852 and it is the county seat of Alameda County. Oakland and Long Beach are the most ethnically diverse cities in the U.S. There are over 150 languages spoken in Oakland. The town of Oakland was incorporated on May 4, 1852.
