Brief History of Ojai, CA
The Chumash Indians were the first known residents of Ojai. The name derives from the Chumash word, “A’hwai” which means valley of the moon. Settled in the 1800’s, Ojai is one of the oldest cities in Ventura County. Ojai began as a cattle ranch in 1837, when it was granted to Fernando Tico. Ojai was first founded as the city of Nordhoff in 1874. During WW I, American sentiment became increasingly anti-German. German and German-sounding names were being changed across the country. As part of the trend, Nordhoff was renamed Ojai. Though small, in terms of population, Ojai is an active community. Ojai is nestled in a small east-west valley with Ventura on the north and Santa Barbara on the east.
