Brief History of Oxnard, CA
In terms of population, Oxnard is the largest city in Ventura County. Before any European settlement, Oxnard and its surrounding area was first inhabited by the Chumash Indians. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, a Spanish explorer, was the first European to encounter the area. He claimed the area, including Oxnard, for Spain in 1542. The city was named in honor of a man named Henry Oxnard and his three brothers who operated a successful sugar beet factory in Chino, CA. He was enticed to build a two-million dollar factory on the plain inland from Port Hueneme. A new town soon emerged and Oxnard became incorporated on June 30, 1903.
