Brief History of Pittsburg, CA
Situated where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers meet, Pittsburg is nestled in Contra Costa County. Pittsburg was part of the 10,000 acres of land that were granted to Jose Antone Mesa and Miguel Jose Garcia from the Mexican government in 1839. A native of New York, laid out the town of Pittsburg and named it New York of the Pacific, which later changed to New York Landing. Pittsburg’s economy primarily thrived on the fishing and canning industries. After the Columbia Geneva Steel opened for business, the name was changed to Pittsburg, after the eastern birthplace of the steel industry.
