Brief History of Placerville, CA
The center of the Western slope of El Dorado County is Placerville. Placerville incorporated in 1854. As an act of the Legislature, the county seat was moved to Placerville in 1857. Placerville had lost the election, but there was evidence of ballot box stuffing and election fraud that favored the competitor, Coloma. The Gold Bug Mine, the only gold mine in California that is open to visitors, is located in Placerville.
