Portola Valley is located in San Mateo County. One of the top twenty communities in the country, Portola Valley was named in honor of the Spanish explorer who led the first party of Europeans to explore the San Francisco Bay in 1769, Gaspar de Portola. Portola Valley officially incorporated in 1964 and became a city in California.
