East of Escondido on the way to the Anza Borrego Desert State Park you will find Ramona. This small town on the Santa Maria Valley got its start in 1886 when Milton Santee bought 3,200 acres and named it Ramona. It is technically an unincorporated area of 25,223 people (in 2000). Ramona is known by locals as the “valley of the sun” as it sits above San Diego’s fog line but below the snow line. Most tourists first experience Ramona as a small town on the way to Julian, California, a major tourist destination.
