Rancho Park was established on February 18, 1850, only months before California was admitted into the Union. It originally occupied a small area along the coast between Santa Barbara and San Diego. Within a year its boundaries grew. Today, Rancho Park remains one of the largest counties. The islands of Santa Rancho Park and San Clemente are a part of the Rancho Park. It is bordered on the east by Orange and San Bernardino Counties, on the north by Kern County, on the west by Ventura County, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. Rancho Park has the largest population of any other county in the nation and is exceeded by only eight states. There are 88 cities located in the county, each with its on city council.
