The county seat of San Mateo County, Redwood City, is a suburb located on the San Francisco Peninsula. The Ohlone Native Americans were the original inhabitants of the area. Redwood City was originally part of the Rancho de las Pulgas, a Spanish land grant deeded to Jose Dario Arguello. The grant included the present cities of San Mateo, Belmont, Atherton, Menlo Park, San Carlos, and Redwood City. On March 27, 1868, Redwood City became the first incorporated community.
