Brief History of Ripon , CA
The City of Ripon is located in San Joaquin County. The first known inhabitants of Ripon were the Laquisimne of the Yokut tribes. In 1772, Don Pedro Fages arrived in the area and made the first written report. William Gulnack was the first legal European owner of Ripon. Gulnack and a friend, Peter Lassen opened a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a flour mill in San Jose. Ripon was originally named Murphy’s Ferry and later known as Stanislaus City. When Amplias B. Crooks came to the area in 1874 he renamed it Ripon after his birthplace in Wisconsin. With the Chamber of Commerce as the leading sponsor and financial backer, Ripon officially incorporated in 1945.
