Brief History of Sacramento, CA
Located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 5 and 80 and California Highway 99 is the city of Sacramento, the capital of California. With a population of 460,000 people, it is the seventh largest city in California. Just as important the greater metropolitan area around Sacramento is the fourth largest in California. Sacramento, the county seat of Sacramento County, is the oldest incorporated city in California, dating back to 1849 (although the city charter was significantly revised in 1920). However, Sacramento wasn’t declared the state capital until 1879. Sacramento started, like much of the surrounding cities, as a gold rush town in the mid 1800s. When the gold petered out, Sacramento’s residents turned to farming the fertile soil of the Sacramento Delta. To this day, agriculture remains a key part of the economy, although obviously not in the city center. The port of Sacramento, through San Francisco bay via the Sacramento River Delta, was touted to be one of California’s major ports when it opened. However, despite some prominence during the Viet Nam war, the port has continued to lose popularity, and is now on the verge of bankruptcy. Sacramento has a warm Mediterranean climate, which is mild for most of the year, but hot and dry in the summer. Floods are fairly common in the area since the Sacramento Delta area is basically a floodplain. Downtown Sacramento is characterized by office workers, primarily government workers and related businesses.
