Brief History of San Andreas, CA
San Andreas , California was named after San Andres, the patron saint of Spain, by the Mexicans who settled San Andreas in 1848. Soon after the area was settled, gold was found and the race was on. In virtually no time, 1,500 miners were pounding away and the streams and mountain sides of the area, hoping for the next big strike. Located on highway 49, near the towns of Murphys, Mokelumne Hill and Angels Camp, California, this town of just under 3,000 people is the county seat of Calaveras County. Although some of the Goldrush buildings still remain, San Andreas has more of a modern feel to it when compared to other towns in the area.
