Brief History of San Diego, CA
San Diego got its modern start in 1769 when Father Junipero Serra started work on the first of the California missions, San Diego. After Mexican independence was achieved, San Diego along with a lot of other California cities, became part of Mexico. San Diego is the last major city on the west coast before entering Mexico. The traffic between Los Angeles and San Diego is now a constant stream. With a population of about 1.3 million people, San Diego is the second largest city in California and the eighth larges city in the United States. Much of San Diego’s prominence can be attributed to three factors: its proximity to the Mexican border, the beautiful beaches and outstanding weather, and the presence of 16 military bases which gives San Diego a decidedly military flair. During the 1960s and 70s San Diego became a bit run down and started to have problems with their population. Fortunately during the 80s, San Diego began a revitalization program which has restored some of the former glory to this jewel of the west coast. With more than 70 miles of beaches, San Diego is truly beach lovers paradise.
