Brief History of San Diego County, CA
At the ending of the U.S.-Mexican American War the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo made it possible for San Diego to become part of the United States in 1848. San Diego County is one of the original counties in California created in 1850 at the time of statehood.
San Diego was a large area that included most of southern California along with east and south of Los Angeles County. The County was named after San Diego Bay in honor of Franciscan St. Didacus of Alcala which is known in Spanish as San Diego de Alcala de Henares. San Diego County used to be a European settlement and in 1769, the Spanish began the founding of the Mission San Diego de Alcala.
