Brief History of San Dimas, CA
In 1774, the first know exploration of the are took place. When traveling to Monterey from Mexico, Juan Bautista De Anza passed through the area that is now San Dimas. Before that, the first know inhabitants of the area were the Gabrieleno Indians along with other tribes more than 7,000 years before the area was explored in the mid 1700’s by white explorers.
At the beginning of the 1800’s the are was known as Mud Springs. The area was wet and swampy from the local mud springs and started to develop then. The area that is now San Dimas began to populate with ranchers and settlers. Mud Springs was first mapped in 1887 when the Santa Fe Railroad arrived. The San Jose Ranch Company was formed as demand for construction grew. The company first laid out streets and then small businesses began to open. The city grew rapidly and took on the new name of San Dimas. In 1960, San Dimas was finally incorporated.
