Brief History of San Luis Obispo County, CA
San Luis Obispo County was founded in 1850 and was one of the original counties of California. Before San Luis Obispo County was created, the Mission of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded on September 1 st 1772.
There have been many changes in this County like the growth of the wine industry and paving of the roads, but a major part of the county has stayed the same. An area that has not been severely changed is the remote California Valley near Soda Lake. With many beautiful flowers during wildflower season the drive through this area of highway 101 are incredible. There is a region called The Salinas River Valley in San Luis Obispo County that is incorporated in several Steinbeck novels. The area is still mostly the same from the era that Steinbeck was in.
