Brief History of Santa Barbara County, CA
Santa Barbara is located just along the Pacific Coast 90 miles NW of Los Angeles. Because of its Mediterranean climate, Santa Barbara County is often referred to as the “American Riviera.” The Chumash tribe are historical inhibitants of Santa Barbara County. The Santa Inez Mountains are right behind the city and rise dramatically with several peaks over 4,000 feet high making a beautiful scenic backdrop.
The beautiful city of Santa Barbara became a winter escape for the titans of post Civil War America with sunset views that overlook the pacific and channel Islands. Many private railroad cars made the sidings of Santa Barbara clustered. The hillsides of Santa Barbara were chosen for grand estates by Owners of Industry. By the first decade of the 20 th century, the cities major home sites were built by family homes. On June 29 th 1925, an earthquake damaged the city and then followed major rebuilding. Santa Barbara County is a beautiful place to visit any time of the year.
