Brief History of Santa Clara County, CA

The Spanish Explorers arrived in 1777 and took over what is now called Santa Clara County. Before the arrival of the Spanish Explorers, the land of Santa Clara Valley once overflowed with agriculture. It’s original Native American inhabitants, the Ohlone, which lived in the villages throughout the Santa Clara Valley.

For over 1,000 years the original inhabitants lived peacefully before the Spanish Explorers arrive in the late 1700’s after that, the areas lifestyle changed dramatically. The region was discovered in November 1769 while Gaspar de Portola and Father Juniper were looking for Monterey Bay. The Mission Santa Clara de Asis was built along the banks of the Guadalupe Creek which is Santa Clara County’s first mission and pueblo.
