Brief History of Santa Paula, CA

The Chumash Indians were the first to settle in Santa Paula, California. In 1840, the land was given away as part of a Spanish land grant to Rancho Santa Paula and Saticoy. Approximately twenty years later, the land was subdivided into smaller farms. The discovery of oil in 1880 led to the formation of the Union Oil Company. Incorporation of Santa Paula occurred on April 22, 1902. The ideal climate and fertile soil have contributed to the agricultural production of citrus fruits. Santa Paula is a city in Ventura County with very little traffic, unlike its neighboring cities of Ventura and Camarillo.
