Brief History of Santee, CA
First settled by Father Junipero Serra as a site for the Mission de Alcala, Santee California was originally named Cowleston, after George Cowles one of the early pioneers of the area. When George died, his wife remarried and got the city’s name changed to honor husband #2. Santee is located North of El Cajon and South of Escondido, very close to Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Current population of Santee is about 55,000. Santee is a relatively new city, incorporated in 1980, after a long tough battle to separate from San Diego.
