Brief History of Scotia, CA
Founded in 1863 as Forestville, Scotia was renamed 25 years later. Situated in Humboldt County, Scotia is 28 miles south of Eureka and 244 miles north of San Francisco. Scotia was one of the few company towns to survive the Great Depression. The company town of Scotia houses approximately 800 of the past or present mill employees. Most of the existing homes were built between the 1920’s and the 1950’s. Then a large 1992 earthquake occurred causing extensive regional damage.
