Brief History of Signal Hill
The city of Signal Hills is also known as an “oil town”. In 1921, oil was discovered and has been the most famous discovery within the city. Signal Hill got its name from the Spanish settlers. Local native tribes from the 1500’s would signal other tribes located on Catalina Island from the hill top. The hill was called “Loma Sental” meaning “Signal Hill”. In 1784, Manuel Nieto wa the first owner of Signal Hill. Nieto received the land as a grant from King Carlos III of Spain. Due to a harsh winter in 1862, the land faced hardships and was sold to the Bixby clan and named Signal Hill.
