Brief History of Solano County, CA
Solano County is one of the original counties in California created in 1850. It was created before statehood and was called Benicia County. General Mariano Vallejo had the county named “Solano” after an Indian Chief, Chief Solano of the Suisunes. The Chief was also called Sem-Yeto but was given the after the Spanish Franciscan Missionary, Father Francisco Solano during baptism in at the Catholic Mission Church. The name “Sem-Yeto” means “brave or fierce hand.” Chief Solano was a close ally of General Mariano Vallejo.
