Brief History of Stanislaus County, CA
Stanislaus was part of two counties in 1854 with Tuolumne County. Adamsville became the first county seat in 1854 and moved to Empire city later that year. The last move the county had was in 1862 to Knights Ferry. In the early history of the county, the Stanislaus County auditors office was combined with the clerk and Recorders office. Until 1879, most County offices were appointive for a two-year term.
