Brief History of Val Verde, CA

Just East of the 5 freeway at the Castaic Junction, lies the area known as Val Verde, California. It is not actually a city, but a small village in North Los Angeles County. The total population is under 1500, and because of its semi-remote location, many people living close by do not even know where Val Verde is. Starting in the 1020s Val Verde was characterized as a desert resort for African Americans. The community was renamed Eureka. In the late 1960s the community demographics began to change, and now reflect the white or Hispanic orientation of the surrounding area, and the name Val Verde was brought back.
